One automated journey turned two years of digital silence into re-engaged, monetizable audience — with a framework built to scale across the portfolio.
The Problem
Every publisher has them: long-tenured subscribers who’ve quietly gone dark. Endeavor’s Audience Development team had thousands — magazine subscribers who hadn’t opened an email, visited the website, or touched a digital edition in more than two years.
These weren’t bad records. They were dormant ones. And left alone, they created real drag. They sat outside the 12-month engaged audience — the segment that powers newsletters, third-party promotions, and monetization — yet kept receiving digital editions anyway, turning the digital edition into a default delivery mechanism for people who weren’t reading it. Along the way they dragged down engagement metrics and database health, and limited the team’s ability to grow the qualified, engaged audience advertisers and internal stakeholders depend on.
The team needed a scalable, automated way to do one of two things with each dormant subscriber: bring them back, or cleanly identify them as inactive — rather than letting them sit dormant in the system indefinitely.
The Strategy
The team built a fully automated re-engagement journey using Omeda’s marketing automation tools, aimed squarely at magazine subscribers with 24+ months of digital inactivity — a deliberately wider net than the digital team’s standard 18-month window.
Before a single email went out, they got the data right. Omeda audience filtering isolated the inactive magazine segments, and every address was run through FreshAddress to protect data quality and deliverability — so the re-engagement effort started from a clean, deliverable list.
The journey itself led with relevance, then adapted to behavior. The first email used content recommendation logic, surfacing articles matched to each subscriber’s known interests and demographic profile — and falling back to the brand’s top-performing content when behavioral signals were thin. The goal was simple: earn an open or a click, and reclassify that subscriber as engaged on the spot.
From there, the journey’s conditional logic branched the path. Subscribers who engaged were pointed toward newsletter subscriptions and more online content; those who didn’t were offered magazine renewals and alternative ways in — online exclusives, website promotions, podcasts, social, and CredSpark polls and quizzes through the existing CredSpark integration. Subject-line A/B testing tuned open rates along the way. At the end, every subscriber hit a clear decision point: a final renewal offer with one-click renewal, or a cancellation option that notified customer service — recover the subscriber, or cleanly retire the record.
How Omeda Helped
Omeda’s journey automation tool (Odyssey) ran the entire automated path — audience filtering, content-recommendation-led outreach, behavior-based conditional branching, and a final renewal-or-suppress step — with CredSpark polls and quizzes plugged in as an interactive re-engagement channel. FreshAddress verification protected deliverability before deployment.

Crucially, they built it to travel. Two versions of the journey — a full-engagement build for brands with deep digital assets, and a standardized build using elements common to every brand — meant the same play could be replicated across the entire magazine portfolio.
The Results
The journey ran across two brands and produced strong, closely matched recovery rates — the consistency itself a signal that the framework travels:
30.2%
of inactive Processing subscribers engaged
27.6%
of inactive Automation World subscribers engaged
Roughly 28–30% of previously dormant subscribers came back into the engaged audience — people who can now participate in newsletters, promotional programs, and other monetization opportunities they’d been sitting outside of. Beyond the recovery rate, the journey sharpened engagement segmentation, improved database health, and cut the wasteful habit of shipping digital editions to subscribers who weren’t reading them. And because it was built in two portable versions, it left Endeavor with a repeatable framework for recovering dormant audience across every magazine brand it runs.
